Pros:

1. Unique Design: The Masco MA-17 is one of the most visually striking harp guitars on the market. Its intricate design, which includes 16 strings and 33 frets, sets it apart from other harp guitars.

2. Superior Craftsmanship: Each Masco MA-17 is handcrafted in the United States by master luthier, Mark Masco. The attention to detail and quality of materials used in the construction of the guitar are unparalleled.

3. Rich and Complex Tone: The unique design of the Masco MA-17 allows for a rich and complex tone that is not possible with traditional six-string guitars. The additional strings and frets expand the range and versatility of the instrument.

4. Rare and Collectible: Due to its limited production, the Masco MA-17 is a highly collectible instrument. Owning one is a statement of dedication to the harp guitar community.

Cons:

1. High Price Point: The Masco MA-17 is a significant investment, with a price tag that is several times higher than that of a traditional six-string guitar.

2. Learning Curve: Harp guitars, in general, require a significant amount of time and effort to learn. The Masco MA-17, with its unique design and additional strings and frets, may require even more time and dedication to master.

3. Limited Availability: Due to the limited production of the Masco MA-17, it can be difficult to find one for sale. Potential buyers may need to wait for a long time or search extensively to find an instrument in their price range.

Conclusion:

The Masco MA-17 "Holy Grail" harp guitar is an exceptional instrument that offers a unique design, superior craftsmanship, and a rich and complex tone. However, its high price point, learning curve, and limited availability may make it a difficult purchase for some.

If you are a serious harp guitar enthusiast, the Masco MA-17 may be worth the investment. Its rarity and collectible value make it a prized possession for those who value the art of harp guitar making.

However, for those who are just starting out with the harp guitar or who are on a budget, there are other, more affordable options available. Details:

I will include an original schematic and the as it is now with voltage readings. All the carbon comp resistors that were still good are there. Another old PA brought to life by Mad Daddy Amps. The rest of the coupling capacitors were replaced as previous owner had already some them.

All three original pots were frozen up and would barely turn so they have been changed to Cosmos Tacos Japanese high-quality. Here is a Holy Grail Masco MA-17 from 1946/47 in its original condition visually. I installed a Pure Tone four contact high-quality output jack on the back panel, but kept OHM changing screw so to different speaker ohms takes blade screwdriver. The rest were replaced with carbon film or metal resistors.

I will remove the cover and put in packing material, so tubes stay place, which is safest way to ship them. I replaced the power cord with a proper three prong grounded and installed line fuse for sake of safety. I removed the original pilot light, which was down by preamps section, and moved it over power supply end. I installed a power supply bleeder to make the safer if you ever need open it up.

6 survived the test. I did this to keep the AC power parts away from first preamps tube as much possible cut hum. The result of the new caps and power supply layout, grounded cord, artificial tap I installed for filament supply, shorting input jacks, moving pilot light, other reconditioning done to this makes it very quiet with both volume controls at max nothing plugged into. I left the Phono input stock way Masco built it.

I added a pair of 330K blending resistors to the circuit so tone controls would not affect each other or preamps tube bias. I corrected what he did by bringing their values back to original. This is more traditional on later amps. Still a single knob that runs both tone controls as I used double ganged pot so wouldn have to drill another hole in the front panel.

Some one had been in the before I got it, and replaced coupling caps, but with some decent ones so left them. I kept the original tone control values in place for Phono input but installed a Greats 6162 octagonal guitar. I also moved the first node of power supply to before choke and screen after. I plugged the hole with Jeweled, which turns out to be about same color as amp, so it is not too noticeable.

I adjusted the other power supply node resistors to get voltage s where thought they were appropriate and sound good. Just cleaned up the input and components where needed. Dead quiet really in my environment. This sounds incredible on guitar as well.

It enters the circuit after first preamps tube, so it has less gain for harp microphones that tend to overdrive typical guitar amplifier stages. That way I only needed one hole in the back panel.
